When it comes to plastic surgery, breast enhancement procedures are among some of the most commonly performed surgeries done today. If you’re considering undergoing cosmetic surgery, then consider this overview on whether or not you are a good candidate for breast augmentation surgery:

As with any cosmetic surgery procedure, candidates should be at least 18 years of age and in good physical and mental health. Candidates should also have realistic expectations regarding the results. It is also important that candidates are non-smokers, as nicotine and carbon monoxide may interfere with the healing process.

Another way to determine whether or not you’re a good candidate for breast augmentation is to understand the procedure itself. This will not only help you understand what you can expect from the surgery, but will also ensure you are equipped to handle the recovery period. Patients must first determine whether or not they are interested in saline or silicone implants. Saline implants consist of a flexible silicone outer-shell filled with a sterile salt water solution, whereas silicone implants use the same shell but are filled with a cohesive silicone-gel. Patients should also consider which type of incision best suits their physical needs. For example, an inframammary incision is made within the crease below each breast, while a transaxillary incision is hidden within the underarm.

Once you have considered the type of implant and incision method, it’s time to consider your own personal reasons. Women who are unhappy with the size of their breasts, feel self-conscious with their clothing selections, or have one breast that is smaller than the other are often candidates for breast augmentation. Women whose breasts have gone down in size due to weight loss or pregnancy may also be candidates.
