With so many advances in cosmetic technology, it’s no wonder that more and more individuals are undergoing facial plastic surgery. Whether you’re preparing for a facelift or an eyelid lift, consider these tips on what to expect while recovering from facial plastic surgery.

The best way to determine your recovery period for facial plastic surgery is to consider the specific procedure, for example:

  • Face Lift: Your surgeon will wrap your face in a compression bandage or elastic wrap for the first 24 hours, as well as prescribe anti-inflammatory medications to reduce any swelling or discomfort during the first few days after the procedure. You’ll need to stay out of the sun and avoid strenuous exercise for the first several weeks, taking care to keep your head elevated as much as possible. Most patients find that they are able to return to work with makeup within the first two weeks following the procedure.
  • Eyelid Lift: Immediately after an eyelid lift, your plastic surgeon will apply an ointment to your eyes to prevent dryness and reduce the chances of infection before covering them with small sterile bandages. A certain degree of bruising and swelling is normal and can be alleviated with the use of ice packs and prescription medications. Eye-drops may also to be used to reduce itching or redness.
  • Rhinoplasty: Your nose will typically be dressed with a splint or plaster cast for the first week. While this may be itchy, you’ll need to avoid the urge to scratch as these dressings are required to protect your nose and provide support during the healing process. Your doctor may also place a “drip pad” for any bleeding or drainage after the procedure. As with a face lift, you’ll want to keep your head elevated and avoid bending over as much as possible, as this will only increase swelling and discomfort.
